5 Common Hot Tub Issues for Backyard Spas in Knoxville (And How to Fix Them)

Owning a hot tub in the Tennessee Valley should be a stress-free experience. However, between our fluctuating humidity and the specific mineral content of our local water, East Tennessee spa owners occasionally run into a few hurdles.

At Tennessee Valley Pools, we believe most spa issues are easily preventable. Whether you’re dealing with a "Cloudy Water" mystery or a stubborn air lock, here are the five most common hot tub issues we see in the Knoxville area, and how to fix them.

1. The "Cloudy Water" Mystery

Cloudy water is the most frequent call we get, especially during the humid summer months. In the South, high humidity and heavy usage can cause sanitizer levels to drop quickly, allowing organic matter to build up.

  • The Fix: Check your pH and Alkalinity first. If your pH is too high (common with Knoxville’s tap water), your sanitizer can’t do its job.

  • Pro-Tip: If your chemistry is balanced but it’s still cloudy, it’s likely time to clean your filters or use a "clarifier" to help your filter catch tiny particles.

2. The "Air Lock" (No Water Flow After a Refill)

Did you just drain and refill your tub, but now the jets won’t turn on and the heater is throwing an "SL" or "FLO" error? You likely have an Air Lock. This happens when a bubble of air gets trapped in the plumbing, preventing the pump from priming.

  • The Fix: Try turning your jets on and off in 10-second bursts. If that doesn't work, you may need to slightly loosen the union nut on the pump to let the air hiss out.

  • Prevention: Always refill your hot tub by placing your garden hose directly into the filter standpipe. This forces water into the pumps first and pushes the air out as it fills.

3. Frequent Circuit Breaker Tripping

If your GFCI breaker snaps off the moment you turn on your spa, it’s a sign of a safety "trip." In East Tennessee, this often happens after one of our famous heavy rainstorms.

  • The Fix: Check if moisture has gotten into the ozonator or the electrical pack. However, if the breaker trips immediately every time, it’s often a sign of a failing heater element or a faulty pump.

  • Warning: Electrical issues can be dangerous. If a simple reset doesn't work, it’s time to call a professional spa service technician in the Tennessee Valley.

4. Protecting Against Summer Power Surges

Knoxville is no stranger to intense summer thunderstorms. These storms often bring power surges that can fry the sensitive computer motherboards inside your Caldera or Fantasy Spa.

  • The Fix: We strongly recommend installing a dedicated surge protector at your spa’s disconnect box. Think of it as an insurance policy for your spa's "brain." If a storm is particularly bad, it’s never a bad idea to manually flip the breaker until the lightning passes.

5. Slimy or Rough Shell Walls

If the walls of your hot tub feel "slimy," you have the beginnings of biofilm (bacteria). If they feel like "sandpaper," you have calcium scale buildup, a common result of Knoxville’s moderately hard water.

  • The Fix: For slime, you need to "purge" your plumbing with a professional line cleaner and then shock the water. For scale, you’ll need a Stain & Scale sequestering agent to pull those minerals back into the water and out of your shell.
